This software fills a gap in the existing capabilities provided by CAD/CAM, FEA, statistical modeling, and physical material and component testing, by effectively integrating them into a single computational processing framework.

VEXTEC’s software integrates virtual material microstructure simulation with cloud computing to analyze component, system and fleet performance and assess the impact on a client’s business.  With the support of multiple government agencies and Fortune 100 companies, VEXTEC was able to map the material microstructure, the genetic code of materials. This mapping process was built into our VPS-MICRO® software to simulate manufactured product behavior by taking into account the variability imparted by the combination of material processing, geometric tolerances, and customer usage.

We model material at its fundamental level: its microstructure. Simulating microstructure is important since it plays the key role in determining when, where and how failures occur. Over the last 30 years, most engineering disciplines have embraced computational methods – CAD, CAE, EDA, CAM – that have dramatically increased manufacturing productivity. But the analysis of material failure remains largely wedded to old methods. Product reliability is determined using laboratory testing of many identical products. These methods are expensive and slow; worse, inaccuracies lead to overdesign with large safety factors. This overdesign leads to products that are bigger, heavier, more expensive and less competitive. Simulating product geometry and loads can be done with widely available tools such as CAD and FEA, but simulating a product’s material is difficult. Subtleties in casting, forging, rolling and heat treatments will vary the material microstructure widely. VPS-MICRO allows manufacturers to predict product reliability with much less testing and greatly reduce costs.

VPS-MICRO meshes conventional FEA with a 3-D spatial model of the material microstructure to predict relative component durability and life over time.  VEXTEC’s patented physics-based computational methods predict lifecycle data for each individual grain in the component’s material microstructure.  This technology has been successfully applied to metal, laminated composite, and hybrid composite structures.

VEXTEC provides insight into why damage occurs-how cracks and corrosion begin and grow over time. Sensitivity studies identify what can be done to prevent damage initiation and growth through modifications to material design, component design, processing, or in-service load conditions. These sensitivity studies can show the effects of varying attributes like heat treatments, surface conditions, alloys, geometry, residual stress, or in-service loads and stresses.
